NEW MEDICINE SERVICE

When you’ve been prescribed a new medicine, you may feel overwhelmed with all the information you receive and wish you had asked more questions. The NHS New Medicine Service, funded by the NHS and available at MPS Pharmacy, allows you to ask our pharmacist all those questions during a private consultation, helping you to understand your condition and the medicine you’ve been prescribed.

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM THIS SERVICE?

If you’ve been diagnosed with one of the following conditions, our pharmacist may recommend the service:

  • Asthma

  • Respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • Conditions where you take medication to control the way your blood clots

HOW DOES THE SERVICE WORK?

When dispensing your medicine our pharmacist will recognise if it’s new and ask if you want to
sign up to the service. If you do, there are three simple steps:

You’ll be invited to have a private consultation with the pharmacist at a mutually convenient time. As part of the consultation, you’ll be required to complete a consent form.

During the private consultation, you’ll be able to ask our pharmacist:

  • • For more information about your condition and medicines

  • • Any questions or talk through concerns you may have

  • • The most effective way to take your medicine – you may find you benefit from taking your medicine in a different way or at a certain time of day

All of which will allow you to manage and be in control of your condition.

We’ll arrange a follow-up appointment for a few weeks later to check how you are getting on. You can obviously ask our pharmacist for more help and advice on this or any other concerns you may have.
